Constructed in 1940, the Long Beach Airport is the oldest municipal airport in the region and is considered a masterpiece of architecture. It also possesses one of the few historic terminal buildings in the U.S. that has been modernized and remains a full-service hub. Not just an airport, LGB offers several attractions for visitors, most notably the exhibition of ceramic tile artworks by Grace Clements, a product of the famed Works Progress Administration of the 1940s, and other important works of the era.
For those curious about the nuts and bolts of aviation, the airport offers free tours for groups of five or more. Guests get an enlightening behind-the-scenes look at the terminal, fire and rescue operations, airfield landing systems, and art and architecture, as well as a guided walk through the Historical Aviation Photographic Exhibit, which houses many wonderful photos of the area's legendary aviators.
