The Tinkertown Museum is possibly the most amazing and unique museum in New Mexico and presents the life works of its founder Ross Ward. It contains a huge number of attractions many of which were hand carved by the museum founder. The main theme of the museum is miniature wooden carved figures that are displayed as part of interactive dioramas. You can press buttons and pull levers to make the figures move, the most popular being the figures of the Western Town and those of the Circus.
The museum has 22 separate rooms that are joined by wooden walkways and many of the rooms have walls made from thousands of glass bottles. In fact it is estimated that there are over 50,000 bottles in the museum and they definitely add to the quirkiness of the building. Tinkertown Museum is very popular with lovers of true folk art and provides a totally unique environment.
In addition to the carvings and dioramas, the museum also contains an old fortune telling machine and a mechanical one-man-band. You will need a few quarters to make them perform however it is worth spending the extra dollar, especially being as though entrance is only $3 for adults and $1 for children. The exterior of the museum is just as unique as the interior and you can easily spend an hour looking at the madcap objects and storefronts before even entering the main areas. In addition there is a full size antique sailing boat outside the museum that took over 10 years to sail around the world!
