The Vortex Theatre is a small community run project that presents a number of classic, contemporary and risqué theatre productions each year. The theatre first started showing plays over 30 years ago and since its conception it has gained a reputation for showing productions that other community theatres won't show. In addition to a number of locally and nationally produced premieres you can also enjoy unique reworks of some classic productions such as you have never seen before.
As with the other community theatres in Albuquerque, the Vortex is a not-for-profit organization and is a member of the Freedom Community Theatre Project. It relies heavily on local volunteers to work backstage and front of house however there is always enough people willing to help out with the productions. The theatre is located close to the University of New Mexico campus and many of the cutting edge plays are very popular with the students. The auditorium only seats 90 and so booking is recommended for some shows.
As well as being close to the University, the theatre is well situated for restaurants meaning that it is easy to find either an early or late dinner. It is also close to a number of shopping districts and so you can make the most of the day before catching a performance. Theatre opening times vary depending on the schedule however performances are only shown on Friday and Saturday at 8pm and on Sunday at 6pm and tickets are around $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
