Established in 1969, the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque is the only one of its kind to enjoy the distinction of being Congressionally chartered.
Dedicated to the science of atomic energy and its various applications, the museum guides visitors through the history of the Atomic Age right from its nascent stages to modern uses of nuclear science. The array of exhibits on display includes the 'Pioneers of Science', where you can learn about the founders and major contributors in this field like Marie Curie and Albert Einstein, 'Waging Peace' which shows you how Arms Control was developed and implemented and its various implications in the modern world. Visitors are also introduced to the revolutionary medical uses of nuclear science by way the exhibit named 'Seeing is Healing.' You can also view the Manhattan project in detail where you can learn about how the first nuclear bomb was developed and also witness life-size models of the Fat Man and Little Boy bombs. Discover radiation in the world around you and learn about the various kinds of radiation, both man made and naturally occurring in 'What's hot and what's not.'
The museum also organizes a Scientific Tour series where you can participate in tours to interesting scientific sites; Science Summer Camps for young minds where they can participate in workshops introducing them to the field of robotics, chemistry and the various forms of energy and its sources.
The museum's gift shop houses an interesting collection of books, video tapes, t-shirts, CDs and accessories that revolve around the museum's theme of atomic energy and nuclear physics in the 20th Century. You can take home a smashed quarter with a picture of a mushroom cloud, browse through the variety of educational toys and games, take home a bumper sticker or an interesting t-shirt or a pack of playing cards. The museum is also currently planning to expand into a larger facility called the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History with a host of new exhibits and an outdoor park.
