Named after the Spanish word for 'to explore', the Explora Science Center is an imaginative science museum which aims to create opportunities for inspirational discovery, and to inculcate the joy of learning through interactive experiences in science, technology and art. The museum houses over 200 interactive science, technology and art exhibits suited to all ages.
The collection which is housed in the top two floors of the museum includes unique, interactive scientific exhibits like light and optics, biological perception and energy. You can also browse though the experiment bar, the high wire bike and the robotics lab. Through these interactive exhibits, stimulating demonstrations and workshops that are arranged for children and their parents, Explora aims to explore the interrelation between science, arts and culture. All the exhibits are designed so that they fit perfectly on the tabletops and the parts are hand-sized to allow easy handling. The exhibits are fashioned so that with every interactive experience, there is evidence of previous activity for the next user.
Explora also organizes programs for children to inculcate the spirit of learning and arouse scientific curiosity among them. Children can participate in 'Toddler Time' when the museum opens an hour earlier for the little ones to explore the exhibits before the older children come in. 'The Growing a Scientist program' is offered to children in the age group of two to four years and their adult companions, where preschoolers learn about science by questioning, investigating and experiencing. Some of the activities include magnets, color mixing, animals and the four seasons. For older children, the Science Center organizes the annual science fair, talks by NASA representatives, scientists and professional artists. The Explora Theater opens up a whole new dimension to experiencing the performing arts.
The Explora 'Ideas' gift shop offers educational books, hands-on science kits, constructive toys and challenging puzzles for various levels of expertise. Parents can also have the Science Center organize novel birthday parties for their little ones, which combine education with entertainment, and impart learning in methods specially adapted to suit young children. The store is open daily during regular museum hours and all proceeds are donated to various charities. If you like, you can even sign up to volunteer at the Center. The management does not require you to have a scientific background or experience. Reservations are essential for group visits of nine people or more. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 12 pm to 6pm on Sundays. For further information, you can either call 505-224-8300 or refer to the website www.explora.mus.nm.us
