Home to the largest collection of Spanish-Colonial artifacts in the nation, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History documents the birth and 400 years of Albuquerque history and the Rio Grande Valley region. Showcasing the Art of the Southwest as a reflection of the changing times, the museum features special exhibitions along with the permanent displays.
Of the latter, the 'Common Ground' is an art exhibition which chronologically displays museum owned works to give visitors a fair idea of the evolution of art in New Mexico. The other permanent collection is an exhibition of local history called 'Four Centuries: A History of Albuquerque'. Some of the major attractions here include the religious artifacts, treasure chests filled with pearls and gold coins and early maps dating back to the 15th Century. You can also experience a multimedia presentation which records the development of the city right from 1875 onwards.
The art collection is comprised of works by regional artists, both historical and contemporary. The outdoor sculpture garden features over 50 works by 20th Century artists like Glenna Goodacre, Michael Naranjo, and Luis Jiménez. The museum also hosts many events like arts and crafts fairs, children's art classes and concerts at the Tigeux Park, located right across the museum. You can also shop for souvenirs like books, jewelry and Navajo dolls at the Gallery Store or enjoy a relaxed lunch or a leisurely coffee at the Museum's City Treats Café.
The museum also conducts Old Town Walking tours at 11 am from Tuesday to Sunday during spring, summer and fall. The museum offers free admission on the first Wednesday of every month. General admission to the museum is also free on every Sunday morning from 9 am to 1 pm.
