The La Quebrada Cliff's are as spectacular as they are they are dangerous, with the foaming ocean churning a good 110 feet beneath them. It is these precipitous cliffs that the Clavadistas of La Quebrada plunge into, treating viewers to a scintillating experience that is sure to last them a lifetime.
The tradition of diving of the steep Quebrada Cliffs began in the 1930s, with locals putting their lives at risk as they jumped into the ebbing waters. The challenge does not begin at the actual dive itself. In fact, the divers first have to weave their way up the natural clefts that have etched themselves into the steep stone face, to reach the summit. The dive can be perilous and those who participate know that just as well as anyone else does. And so, don't be surprised if you find every one of these divers crossing themselves and mouthing a little prayer in the sanctuary before they set forth up the Cliff.
These dives are also very complicated, with the divers having to time their plunge with the incoming waves to avoid hitting the otherwise shallow channel bed. Also, the inlet of water is very narrow, which further augments the element of risk. Today, these dives are organized into diving shows, five times a day. You can view the divers perform their death-defying act at 12.45 pm, 7:30 pm, 8:30 pm, 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm. The last show is undoubtedly the most stunning of them all, with divers plummeting into the dark waters under a torch-lit night.
Many of these Clavadistas of La Quebrada are professional divers who are welcomed at competitions and demonstrations all over the globe. One of the most poplar must-sees on every visitor's list, the Quebrada Cliff Divers' Show should undeniably be a part of yours.
