Located at Zócalo de la Ciudad, La Catedral attracts hoards of visitors, some of whom offer their daily prayers at the church and others who marvel at the architectural beauty of this edifice.
La Catedral is unlike any other on account of its structure which is fashioned in a manner similar to that of mosques. This is distinctly discernable in the magnificent dome which tops the church as well as the two tall minarets which are strikingly similar in appearance to Byzantine towers. The church dates back to the 1930s and is also one of the first cathedrals in Acapulco. The origins of La Catedral are shrouded in mystery as some locals believe that it was initially constructed as a movie set. This speculation is largely because the style of architecture is very different from the theme which dominates traditional Mexican religious structures.
The interiors of the cathedral are decorated with yellow and golden tiles while the walls are patterned with white and blue. The church is also home to an exquisite statue of Christ which is preserved in a crystal coffin. Service is conducted at La Catedral from 7 to 9 in the morning, all through the week. Mass is conducted only in Spanish and although visitors are welcome, the church is rather stringent with regards to the dress code. Bare shoulders and legs are not appreciated and it is advisable that you refrain from taking photographs during service.
La Catedral springs to life during religious festivities and adorns an air of revelry and celebration. For further information, you can contact the Tourism Board at 744 481 1160.
