Historical and Cultural Acapulco can best be seen in the city's Historic Museum. This important institution is housed in old Fort San Diego which is built in the shape of a five pointed star, and was once the most powerful Spanish fortress on the Pacific Coast. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1776 and rebuilt in 1783. Inside the fortress there is a vast array of historical and cultural artifacts on display. For another form of Acapulco culture there are the famous beaches in the bay area known as La Costera. On beaches with names like Papagayo, Hornos, Tamarindos and Icacos, people from all over the world enjoy the sun, the sea and the exciting atmosphere of Mexico. At the main beach there is a water park that puts on dolphin shows.
