Since 1934 the amazing cliff divers of Acapulco have been entertaining tourists with their amazing, and risky, feat. These incredibly talented athletes climb up onto cliffs that stand some 100 feet above the blue ocean waters at the bottom of a narrow gorge. The first thing the divers do when they arrive at the top is to pray for their safety at an altar to the Virgin of Guadeloupe. The divers must then time their dives precisely so that the incoming waves create the deepest water possible in the gorge. At the precise moment they first dive out and away from the side of the cliff before rotating their body into a smooth dive to the waters below.
